Tips to Keep Teeth Healthy This Christmas

With Christmas around the corner, the number of candies and chocolates that are consumed increases. This can lead to tooth decay and other dental problems. A few tips can help maintain good oral health through the holidays.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Many people enjoy holiday treats, but it’s important to be mindful of how much you chew or consume sugary drinks because the bacteria in your saliva feed off of sugar and produce acid that wears down the enamel of your teeth. Give your mouth a break in between meals, and be sure to brush and floss regularly to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Even if it’s cold outside, be sure to wear a jacket to cover up your bare arms when you’re out in the cold weather to avoid exposing your teeth to harsh temperatures. And don’t forget about protecting your lips from drying winter weather as well!

Avoid Sticky Treats

Sticky candies like caramel, gumdrops, and candy canes can damage teeth. Not only can they be difficult to remove from your teeth, but they can also get stuck in between teeth. If they’re not removed within a few hours of consumption, they can cause tooth decay, cavities, or even gum disease. Instead, stick to treats such as chocolates that are easier to eat and won’t damage your teeth as much, or eat softer foods that won’t get stuck in your mouth. If you’re still craving something sweet, opt for a treat that cleans your teeth while you eat! For example, sugar-free gums can help remove food and bacteria from your teeth and gums as you eat them.

Avoid Chewy Candies and Desserts

Chewy foods and sugary treats can lead to tooth decay. While sugar isn’t good for your teeth or your waistline, it’s even worse for your teeth. That’s because bacteria that cause cavities eat the sugars on your teeth. Then the bacteria release acid that eats away at your enamel and causes decay. So even though those cookies and candies are tasty, it’s best to save them for dessert. Instead, snack on healthier options like veggie sticks or cheese cubes dipped in salsa instead. Fruits like apples are high in fiber and water, so they make a healthy snack too.

Visit Your Dentist

In addition to brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day, you should also visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. These appointments are crucial for keeping your smile healthy and bright!

Since you’re already going to be visiting the dentist for a checkup at the end of the year anyway, why not make an appointment now to get ahead of the game?
